Outdoor Plants or Flowering Plants
Outdoor plants are mainly grown for their flowers or leaf colors. All outdoor plants are grown under direct sunlight to induce proper pigmentation in flowers. However, some palms are grown outdoor to gain proper trunk size. Plants grown outdoor are hardy and needs regular care. The following care should be taken for outdoor plants:
Need frequent watering because of active growth habits. They transpire and evaporate enormous amount of water and, therefore, watering is crucial. In addition, because the plants are above ground under direct sunlight, the soil temperature rises corresponding to the ambient temperature. Therefore, intermittent watering is highly recommended to keep the roots active and prevent root damage.
These plants use more fertilizer than indoor plants and use balanced liquid fertilizer to keep the plants healthy.
Must maintain direct sunlight during day and amount of flowering is directly related to length of daylight.
All wilted flowers must be removed to prevent fungus growing on dead petals.
Since flowering plants are grown under direct sunlight, shipping with refrigerated trucks marginally stresses the plants. However, upon delivery, the plants need to be taken off immediately from the sleeves and watered.
Indoor Plants or Foliage Plants
Indoor plants are generally grown under shade houses or greenhouses. Usually the shade ranges from 33% to 95%. Since leaf color is more important in indoor plants, shade increases the darkness of the leaf. In some cases, dark shade in combination with cool temperature induces flowering. Indoor plants do not require enormous amount of care. The following growing conditions must be maintained to keep the plants healthy:
Water to moist. Do not let water drain out of the pot and this means you have saturated the soil and too much water is not good for indoor plants. Please call us to check about water requirement of individual plants.
Most of the plants come with some amount of fertilizer and usually you don't need to fertilize the plants right away. Please remember that most of the plants are fertilized with slow releasing fertilizer and you might not need any fertilizer for at least a month.
Although these plants are shade grown, they cannot be kept in complete dark. Plants need light to maintain its physiological activities such as photosynthesis, transpiration, etc. However, full sunlight is harmful to the shade grown plants and it will burn the leaves. Please ask us the light requirement for individual plants.
